Ingredient guide

Retinol, started properly

Retinol is the most evidence-backed ingredient in skincare for fine lines, texture and pigmentation. Nothing else over the counter comes close.

It is also the ingredient people quit fastest, because almost everyone starts it wrong: too strong, too often, too impatiently. Here is the way that sticks.

Why everyone quits by week three

Retinol speeds up how quickly your skin renews itself. Until your skin adapts, that shows up as dryness, flaking and mild peeling, usually in weeks two to four. It is called the adjustment phase and it is normal, not an allergy.

People who start with a strong formula every night hit that phase at full force, panic, and stop. The ingredient gets the blame; the schedule was the problem.

The starting protocol

Start at 0.025 to 0.05%, or a gentle encapsulated formula. Apply a pea-sized amount to dry skin at night, twice a week, for the first month.

Buffer it: moisturiser first, retinol on top, or retinol sandwiched between two layers of moisturiser. Buffering slows absorption and dramatically reduces irritation without cancelling the results.

From month two, move to every other night. From month three, most skin handles nightly use. If your skin flakes, drop back a step for a week. That is not failure, that is the method.

The non-negotiable partner

Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, and sun damage is the very thing you are using retinol to undo. Daily SPF is not optional alongside retinol. Using retinol without sunscreen is filling a bath with the plug out.

Niacinamide is the other good companion: it strengthens the barrier retinol temporarily stresses, making the whole process more comfortable.

When to expect results

Texture improves first, usually within 8 to 12 weeks. Fine lines and pigmentation take three to six months of consistent use. Anyone promising faster is selling something.
